Teacher Layoffs Loom Large in School Board Election
The teacher's union has vocally thrown its support to John Lee Evans.
Change on the San Diego School Board Now!
We need to protect our schools from looming budget cuts and layoffs.
Are you satisfied with our San Diego Schools? Or do you believe that we can do much better? In 2008 we will have a new Superintendent and the majority of the seats on the school board are up for election. Our schools affect all of us. School board races really matter.
“An excellent public education system is the lifeblood of democracy. The American dream is lost if our communities are divided by good schools and bad schools, by haves and have nots. Our community is only as strong as our weakest school.”
We all have a stake in every child in San Diego getting a good education. Parents should not have to send their child great distances to find a good school. San Diego Unified is a huge district. We need to put "neighborhood" back in the neighborhood school. That means that the parents and teachers in each community should have more say about what kind of schools they have.
We need to have competitive salaries and we also need to have the right kind of working conditions and support that will encourage teachers to take on the challenges of the most difficult schools. If we don't change this, we will never close the achievement gap.
The buck stops at the school board. Are you satisfied with the results? If you are, you should re-elect the incumbents. If you believe that the board needs to have a stronger voice in setting priorities with a clear vision of education in the 21st century, then vote for change. Otherwise, we can hire the best Superintendents in the country and never achieve our goals. We are on our third Superintendent in three years. Our San Diego schools belong to all of us. We need to elect board members who will advocate for what we want.
Please let me know how you think our schools need to be improved.
